Action Basics

How actions are chosen, repeated, and enhanced.

Action Basics

Planning ahead

Every turn, you do two things:

  1. Resolve the action you chose last turn. Now you specify the details: targets, directions, whether to enhance.
  2. Select the action you'll perform next turn. Name only, no details yet.

You're always committing to an action before you know what's going to happen. This is the core tension of the game.

Cooldowns

After performing an action, you can't choose it again until a number of turns pass. This is the action's cooldown, typically 2 or 3.

If you Move on Turn 1 (cooldown: 3), you can next choose Move on Turn 4. Your Turn 2 action must be something different.

Enhancement

Most actions have a Base version and an Enhanced version.

Enhanced versions cost extra energy, shown in parentheses. A * means that specific enhancement can be applied up to 4 times per target.

You commit to enhancements when you specify your action details. If something goes wrong between then and resolution (you take a hit, lose energy), you still pay the enhancement cost. If paying the cost would reduce your energy to 0, the enhancement is automatically cancelled and the action resolves in its normal version instead.

Notation

Throughout the action descriptions:

  • Base = What the action does at no extra energy cost
  • Enhanced = Upgraded version (extra energy cost in parentheses)
  • Cooldown = Number of turns before you can choose this action again
